The Parent of a Child Student visa allows a parent to enter the UK for the purpose of caring for their child (children), who is between the age of 4-11 and is studying at an independent, fee-paying school on a Child Student visa.

Who is eligible for a Parent of a Child Student visa?

Successful applicants must show that:

  • They are aged 18 or over.
  • They are a parent of a child who has, or is at the same time applying for, entry clearance or permission to stay as a Child Student.
  • The Child Student’s other parent must not be in the UK or seeking to come to the UK.
  • The Child Student is aged between 4-11 at the date of their application.
  • They intend to live with the Child Student during their stay in the UK.
  • They meet the financial requirements – a different level of funds is required depending on the circumstances of the applicant / Child Student – see below.
  • They must not intend to make the UK their main home.
  • They must have sufficient funds to maintain their main home outside the UK, in addition to meeting the financial requirements.
  • They must be of good character and not be in breach of Immigration Rules.

Financial requirements

To meet the financial requirements, the applicant generally needs to show:

1) £1,560 for each month of their intended stay in the UK up to a maximum of 9 months; and

2) if there are additional children who will be under the applicant’s care in the UK at the same time, £625 for each month of their intended stay up to a maximum of 9 months for each of the additional child.

If the applicant is applying for permission to stay and has already been in the UK for 12 months or longer, they do not need to provide evidence of funds.

Required level of funds must be held for at least 28 days, with the most recent statement dated within 31 days before the date of application.

If the applicant is applying together with the Child Student and both have not been living in the UK for 12 months or longer, they need to meet the financial requirement detailed in Appendix Child Student CS 10.2.

What documentation do I need to supply?

In support of a Parent of a Child Student visa application, you will need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of ID, e.g., Passport.
  • Proof of relationship, e.g., birth certificate, marriage certificate.
  • Proof of the Child Student’s immigration status, e.g., a copy of their BRP; a copy of their visa grant letter; or a copy of their application form.
  • Proof of the other parent’s residence outside the UK, e.g., employment letter stating they are employed outside the UK and will not seek to relocate to the UK.
  • Proof of accommodation in the UK if available, e.g., land registry or tenancy agreement.
  • Proof of the Child Student’s study arrangements, e.g., a letter from their school confirming their enrolment.
  • Proof of finance, e.g., bank statements.
  • TB test certificate for applicants from listed countries if applying for entry clearance to come to the UK for more than 6 months.
