Introduction

The Global Talent visa is an immigration route that allows individuals with exceptional talent or exceptional promise to come to the UK. The Global Talent route can lead to settlement and is open to individuals that meet strict eligibility criteria in the fields of natural and medical sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences, digital technology, research and innovation, and arts and culture (inclusive of film, television, fashion and design, and architecture).

For architecture applicants, there are important requirements you must fulfil as part of your Global Talent visa application. This includes making an endorsement application to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and supplying the necessary supporting evidence. This can be complicated, but the right legal team can give you a much better chance of success.

At Latitude Law, our team has a wealth of experience in supporting applications for the UK Global Talent visa. We can review applications and evidence, advise you on the criteria you need to meet and offer the legal services you need throughout the process. Call us today on 0300 131 6767 or use our online enquiry form to request a call back.

What is the Global Talent visa (Architecture)?

Applicants must meet either exceptional talent or exceptional promise criteria in order to secure a Global Talent visa. Those with exceptional talent are expected to be leaders in their fields, while exceptional promise applicants should have the potential to become leaders, and demonstrate this through their work.

A successful application grants the applicant leave to stay in the UK for up to five years, or less if you requested a shorter period as part of your application. It may be possible to stay in the UK for longer if you meet the relevant eligibility criteria - either by applying to extend your visa as many times as you wish, or by applying for settlement in the UK.

Global Talent is a route to settlement and you may be eligible to apply to settle permanently in the UK after three years as a Global Talent visa holder, provided your visa was granted on the basis of exceptional talent. If you applied based on exceptional promise, you will need to stay in the UK for five years before you can apply for settlement.

Who is eligible for the Global Talent (Architecture) visa?

Applying for a Global Talent visa is a two-stage process, the first of which is to seek an endorsement from a Home Office-approved endorsing body. There is an endorsing body for each field to which the Global Talent visa applies, and for architecture applications, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will assess applications. You must secure an endorsement from RIBA before you can apply for the visa itself.

To be eligible in the field of architecture, you must satisfy the endorsing body that you meet the following requirements:

  • You have been recognised either as an exceptional talent, or as someone with exceptional promise; and
  • You are professionally engaged in producing outstanding presented, published or internationally exhibited work; and
  • You can show regular professional engagement in your field over the last five years; and
  • You show either a substantial track record in at least two countries (if evidencing exceptional talent) or a developing track record in at least one country (if evidencing exceptional promise).

You will also need to be able to demonstrate that:

  • You are aged 18 or over.
  • You do not fall for refusal under any of the general grounds.

Note that if you hold a prestigious prize, you may be eligible to apply for this visa without the need to obtain endorsement. A list of the prestigious prizes can be found here: Immigration Rules - Immigration Rules Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes - Guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
