What is a UK Construction Worker Visa?

A construction visa is granted in the Skilled Worker visa route, which allows for sponsorship by a UK employer of individuals skilled/qualified in the field of construction.Ā

While most construction jobs are not highly-skilled enough for general sponsorship, many are included in the immigration salary list or temporary shortage list, what were previously known as shortage occupations. Inclusion on these lists enables employers to sponsor workers in job codes at RQF 3-5: below degree-level.Ā

Essentially, the construction worker visa offers long-term permission to live and work in the UK, bring your family members, and ultimately qualify for indefinite leave to remain on the basis of ability in the field of construction.

Who is eligible for a Construction Worker Visa?

Generally, skilled tradespeople working in construction are eligible for sponsorship. They must also meet an English language requirement, and have a valid TB certificate if from a listed country.Ā Ā

The requirements for this visa - including the minimum salary payable - can be quite complex, but it is available for skilled construction workers of any nationality across the world, as long as you have valid sponsorship.

You will receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer (sponsor) in the construction industry, who must be a recognised/registered sponsor in the UK.Ā

The new rules for UK Skilled Worker Visas in 2025

The eligibility criteria for Skilled worker visas changed from 22 July 2025. The new rules raised the eligibility for the visa type to a minimum of ā€˜degree-level jobs’, (RQF 6), with the exception of a list of shortage occupations on two temporary lists.Ā

How to qualify for a Construction Visa in the UK

To qualify for a UK construction worker visa sponsorship, you need to be offered a job (which meets salary requirements) by a licensed employer, a certificate of sponsorship, and prove English language proficiency.Ā

After collating all of your information and documentation, you’ll then need to make an official application via the UK Government website. It is helpful to work with an immigration specialist to ensure that you understand the process, and optimise your application to ensure it isn’t refused.

It’s important to remember that you may also need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card to work on a UK construction site, even though this isn’t a direct visa requirement.Ā

Application requirements for a UK Construction Worker VisaĀ

The application requirements for a skilled worker visa in construction are as follows:

  • Job offer from approved sponsor
  • Certificate of sponsorship
  • Proof of English proficiency/knowledge
  • Personal savings of at least Ā£1,270 (unless the employer certifies maintenance)
  • TB Test Certificate for certain nationalities
  • Valid passport

On top of these requirements, you’ll also have to pay an application fee of Ā£769 to Ā£1,751, depending on the circumstances (more Skilled worker visa fee information is available on the UK Government website, or via our team if you’d like to speak with us).

What documentation do you need for a Construction Visa?

For your construction visa application, it is advisable to gather the following supporting documents:

  • Passport
  • Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency
  • Job Details
  • CV
  • Professional Qualifications
  • Evidence of financial support
  • TB test results (if applicable)

Gathering all of your documents, and ensuring they’re formatted correctly, is a huge differentiator when it comes to the success of applications, which is why it’s suggested that you work with immigration specialists, increasing your chances of a successful application first time.Ā

How to apply for a UK Construction Worker VisaĀ

Whilst the actual act of applying for a UK construction visa through the skilled worker application portal is relatively simple, the overall process of gathering documents can be confusing.Ā

Online, you’ll need to answer a series of questions regarding your employment history, qualifications, sponsors, and more. On top of this, you’ll need to provide a number of documents to support your application. This part can be tricky, so we’d recommend seeking help from UK-inbound immigration specialists.
