Introduction

This work and study route provides an opportunity for international graduates of a list of top universities, awarded an overseas (non-UK) degree or postgraduate qualification within the last 5 years, to live and work in the UK. The qualification must have been awarded by a university on the Global Universities List at the date of the award.

Who is eligible for the High Potential Individual visa?

As above, to be eligible for a High Potential Individual visa, you must have been awarded a qualification by an eligible university.

Applicants must not have disqualifying criminal convictions, and must meet a modest financial requirement. You must also meet an English language requirement, which means taking a test if your degree was not taught in English. You cannot use this route if you’ve previously been granted permission to stay under the UK’s doctorate extension or graduate visa schemes.

You do not need to have a job offer to apply.

What documentation do I need to supply?

Before you apply you will need to pay for Ecctis to check whether your application is valid and provide your Ecctis statement with your application. You will also need to provide proof of your knowledge of English, either through passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT), or if your degree studied abroad was taught in English your Ecctis Academic Qualification Level Statement and English Language Proficiency Statement can be provided to meet this requirement.

You’ll also need to provide your national passport, proof of your relationship with your partner or children, if they are applying with you, and your tuberculosis test certificate if you’re from a listed country.

A High Potential Individual Visa is normally valid for two years, for holders of a PhD or other doctoral qualifications, it will be valid for three years.

Can I extend my High Potential Individual visa?

You cannot extend a High Potential Individual visa, however you may be able to switch into a different visa route, for example a Skilled Worker visa.

What should I do if my application is refused?

The refusal of a High Potential Individual visa may be challenged by way of Administrative Review, meaning that the decision is reviewed by another Home Office official. Please contact out team if you would like to discuss your High Potential Individual visa refusal in more detail.

Can the High Potential Individual visa route lead to settlement?

The route does not lead to settlement (although permission to remain as a High Potential Individual can count towards a future 10 years long residence application).

Can I switch to another visa category?
