Is the UK going to extend the Transition Period?
The current view of the British government is that the Transition Period, due to end on 31 December 2020, remains in place. Therefore, EU citizens looking to relocate to the UK should aim to do so before that date, and apply for residence documentation under the EU Settlement Scheme before the current deadline of 30 June 2021. Doing so will mean you are covered by much more favourable immigration rules than you would be if arriving from 1 January 2021. The inability of the UK and EU to continue negotiations over Brexit due to Covid-19 does however raise the possibility that the Transition Period will be extended.
