I am considering applying for asylum – should I wait until the health crisis is over?
As a general rule, the Home Office believe you should claim asylum as soon as you know you have a problem in your own country. However, we would generally recommend that you seek legal advice about your potential claim for asylum before contacting the Home Office about it. This is because there may be problems or complications with your case that timely legal advice can solve. In light of Covid-19, delaying your asylum claim could make more sense – no Home Office appointments are currently available anyway, so it is better to give instructions to a lawyer and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your case before you share these with the UK government.
